- Newfoundland Bowel Health Test
For adults checking bowel health, especially if they have a change in bowel habits or a family history of bowel problems.
It is particularly relevant to adults with a family or personal history of colorectal polyps or cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or unexplained changes in bowel habits. New symptoms such as unexplained weight loss or abdominal pain should be assessed by a clinician even if the home test is negative.
The Newfoundland Bowel Health Test contains: Dipstick test, Specimen collection tube with extraction buffer, Reaction tube, Stool catcher, and Instructions for use. You will also need a timer.
The kit uses a stool sample to check hidden blood (faecal occult blood). Lay out the supplied components before opening any sealed test device, and refer to the leaflet for any materials you need to provide yourself.
Step 1 — Prepare: Wash and dry your hands, prepare a clean collection area and keep the stool sample clear of toilet water and urine.
Step 2 — Collect and test: Place the stool catcher as instructed and collect a small stool sample. Use the applicator to take material from different parts of the sample, close the extraction tube and mix it thoroughly. Transfer the prepared specimen into the reaction tube as directed, then dip the strip only up to its MAX line. Read at 5 minutes; do not interpret after 10 minutes.
Step 3 — Read: Use a timer and follow the exact reading window in the enclosed instructions. C + T = blood detected; C only = no blood detected; no C = invalid.
Step 4 — After the test: Dispose of used collection materials safely, wash your hands and record the result. If the control is absent or the result is unclear, use a new test and follow the leaflet.
At a glance: Prepare → Collect stool sample → Apply to device → Time and interpret.
The manufacturer’s FIT leaflet describes two coloured lines (C and T) as a positive result, one C line as negative, and no C line as invalid. Even a faint T line counts as positive. Read at 5 minutes and disregard changes after 10 minutes. A positive test detects hidden blood, not its cause: contact your GP for assessment. Ongoing bowel symptoms also need review after a negative result.
When to seek advice: A positive result means blood was detected and should be discussed with a GP to investigate the cause. Seek urgent advice for heavy bleeding or severe symptoms. A negative result does not rule out bowel disease.
FIT detects hidden blood in stool. Blood may be associated with polyps, haemorrhoids, inflammation or other conditions. A home test does not replace bowel screening or clinical assessment.

What does the Newfoundland Bowel Health Test check?
This at-home screening kit uses a stool sample to check hidden blood (faecal occult blood). FIT detects hidden blood in stool. Blood may be associated with polyps, haemorrhoids, inflammation or other conditions. A home test does not replace bowel screening or clinical assessment. The result is intended to help you decide whether further clinical advice is needed; it is not a diagnosis on its own.
Who might consider using the Bowel Health home test?
For adults checking bowel health, especially if they have a change in bowel habits or a family history of bowel problems. It is particularly relevant to adults with a family or personal history of colorectal polyps or cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or unexplained changes in bowel habits. New symptoms such as unexplained weight loss or abdominal pain should be assessed by a clinician even if the home test is negative. A clinician can advise if your symptoms are persistent, severe or outside the purpose of this home screen.
What is included in the Newfoundland Bowel Health kit?
The manufacturer lists Dipstick test, Specimen collection tube with extraction buffer, Reaction tube, Stool catcher, and Instructions for use. Check the actual pack contents and expiry date before starting. You will need a timer and may need other materials as stated in the enclosed leaflet; components and packaging should be checked against that leaflet.
How do I collect the sample and perform the test?
Read the enclosed instructions before opening the device. Place the stool catcher as instructed and collect a small stool sample. Use the applicator to take material from different parts of the sample, close the extraction tube and mix it thoroughly. Transfer the prepared specimen into the reaction tube as directed, then dip the strip only up to its MAX line. Read at 5 minutes; do not interpret after 10 minutes. Use only the sample type and amounts specified for this particular kit, keep the work area clean and do not reuse any single-use component. The step-by-step product tab summarises the process.
How quickly will I get the Bowel Health test result?
Newfoundland states results in about 5 minutes. Start timing when the sample is applied or the device is activated, as the leaflet directs. Read only in the stated window: interpreting too soon or after the cut-off may give a misleading result. Check the control or validity guide first.
How should I interpret my Bowel Health test result?
The manufacturer’s FIT leaflet describes two coloured lines (C and T) as a positive result, one C line as negative, and no C line as invalid. Even a faint T line counts as positive. Read at 5 minutes and disregard changes after 10 minutes. A positive test detects hidden blood, not its cause: contact your GP for assessment. Ongoing bowel symptoms also need review after a negative result. Follow the leaflet’s exact result illustration, as positive and negative patterns are not the same for every self-test.
How accurate is the Newfoundland Bowel Health self-test?
The product is advertised as over 99% for its intended use. This does not mean every individual result is certain: sample collection, timing, storage, expiry and how early a condition is tested can all affect performance. Follow the enclosed instructions and seek professional assessment when symptoms or risk remain.
What if my Bowel Health result is negative, unclear or invalid?
A negative home result does not rule out every cause of your symptoms or concern. If the kit’s required control is absent, the colour comparison is unclear or the test was read outside its window, do not rely on it: repeat with a new kit as directed. Ask a clinician about ongoing symptoms or an unexpected result.
Does a positive FIT mean bowel cancer?
No. Hidden blood can have several causes, including haemorrhoids, inflammation and polyps. The test cannot identify the source. A GP can consider your symptoms, history and whether further investigation is needed. Visible bleeding, persistent bowel changes or unexplained weight loss should be assessed regardless of the home result.
Can I use a bowel health test during my period or with bleeding haemorrhoids?
The manufacturer’s instruction sheet advises against collecting a specimen during or shortly after a menstrual period, or when haemorrhoids or urine may be bleeding, because other blood can affect interpretation. Read the leaflet for its precise timing restriction and ask a clinician about symptoms that do not settle.
